What We Treat

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are larger, abnormal veins close to the skin surface. They often look like large ropes or clusters of grapes under the skin. Veins become enlarged with pools of blood when they fail to circulate blood properly. These visible, bulging veins can usually be traced from the upper inside of the thigh, sometimes branching extensively into the calves, ankles and even into the foot.

Varicose veins may be regarded as a cosmetic nuisance for some, but for others, they also present discomfort. For some patients, potential serious health problems may be present.

Veins are intended to have one-way valves so blood can return uphill to the heart. When valves break down, the pressure of gravity distends and stretches vein branches. The most common causes are genetics and pregnancy.

Without treatment varicose veins always progress. The end stage of untreated varicose veins is chronically swollen legs with brown to purple discoloration. This unhealthy skin may eventually break down and form ulcers at the ankle.
